Horticultural watering
The study and science of Horticulture dates back hundreds to thousands of years, with it’s origins in the transition of human communities from nomadic tribes to sedentary communities. The science of plant cultivation includes the processes of preparing soil for the planting of seeds or cuttings etc and can involve fruits, berries, nuts, vegetables, flowers, trees, shrubs and turf - a wide variety of flora but usually it relates to gardening on a smaller scale
Horticulture differs from Agriculture in two ways.
1. Horticulture generally encompasses a smaller scale of cultivation i.e. small plots of mixed crops.
2. Horticulture includes a wide variety of plants and crops from fruit trees to ground crops.Agriculture cultivations generally focus on one primary crop in much larger numbers.
Having decided on the type of flora you wish to establish, be it flowers, vegetables, fruit trees etc, its wise to take the initial steps of preparing the areas for the particular plants you wish to grow. Many shrubs and trees thrive from a good soil preparation, whilst some plants prefer varying PH levels etc. Understanding these basic requirements can give your garden a great kick start.
Once the home garden is under construction, its also good to understand the varying needs of your chosen plants; how often do they need water; how frequently should they be fed etc. With the climatic changes over the past decade and the clean water restriction throughout Queensland over past years we have seen a huge rise in the need for tank water.
For the more serious gardener here are some simple steps to Horticultural Watering, to ensure your garden gets the water it needs all year round:
1. Install at least one x 3,000 gallon water tank.
2. Use heavy mulch throughout your garden. Spoilt hay type mulches are excellent and as the mulch breaks down re-mulch it. Vegetable gardens should remain around 10" thick whilst trees and shrubs should be around 20" thick.
3. Consider the types of shrubs you wish to grow but bear in mind the heavy water consumers such as ferns, stag’s and tropicals. These types of plants consume large amounts of water and are becoming impractical for the Queensland weather.
4. Get serious about your WATER supply. Capturing water doesn’t need to be expensive, just a little extra effort on the gardeners part as well as a handy supply from H2flow can maintain the level of watering you require. Bear in mind that vegetables are very difficult to incorporate into a waterless garden as most veges need good moisture levels to produce.
